Master of the Stone Head Realm is this painting. One of the largest I did. Doing it I thought, I won’t be painting anything like this again. The time and space won’t be available. I knew that somehow, because it was right. But Stonehead Realm is very alive, in drawings and, now, dioramas.

It has so much to offer, if I do say so myself. Big pot of potatoes. Stupa, cows, orchard, and cute little village w laundry on the line. Magisterial crow, seen it all. Couple in the apartment getting the tour. It’s too much for most people. The pressure of the endless horizon that seems always the same but isn’t, and not in a settling way. One wonders what the cows would think if they looked up to see the Ravenshead Apartments. People come from all over. Infrequently, yes. But from all over, yes. I have visited the sweet village down there, but I felt softly unwelcome. I drink my coffee here now, and try to get the crow to tell me what it is thinking. There’s a bowl of oranges, from the orchard below. There’s also something strange about time ‘here.’ And the orb.

The last Turtle House painting I have. My favorite. This house is located on Main Street, in Grass Valley, CA. I lived there with a bunch of artists and their kids. I screenprinted t-shirts and coffee mugs in the garage, until I by accident started painting. Here it is, high in the mountains and high desert which are my real home. At least in this realm. Wrt others, who knows?

One of my very favorites. Said I’d never sell but it needs a new home.

We’d file in quiet, in our dirty insulated coveralls. Sit down with a cup of bad coffee but here even bad coffee is good coffee. No one speaks, what would there be to say? We look at our coffee and now and then tilt our eyes up to look as deeply as we dare into that painting.

Such an innocuous title for a dinner of the dead. Or at least it so appears. (I never really know what’s going on in my paintings - I don’t have an agenda, I just paint.) I guess if there’s no real food involved the hallway will be just fine. We - the dead, that is - are not really welcome in the places where the food is prepared and eaten. We do get a lot from the aromas, tho, so keep that in mind. It’s stark, and simple. But after a long long time you really appreciate that.

I know I’m not fooling anyone with that title. I know you see the man - kind of, a whisp of - with the nails and the pink shoes (in a box) sitting calmly. You see the paintings, my favorites, on the wall, the house w its clouds, the jumping person, the great Fish. All in the wonderful green tones of my little woodland hut. The Cat keeps me grounded, I guess. A dog would be a better choice, for me, I think. But it’s not a big chair.

I almost died from a brain abscess in 1998. The ER doc actually wrote to me when he retired to tell me that surviving that night was nearly impossible - he still couldn’t understand how it happened. It had effects on me. Good ones. I remember wishing I could bottle it. The way it felt.
